Finding credible health information online
According to data provided by the Health Information National Trends Survey (hints brief No. 1, http://hints.cancer.gov), 132 million Americans are online – 64% of whom have searched for health information on the Internet – and the majority believe that healthcare providers are the most reliable source for health information. In fact, the Internet can be an amazing resource for research, support and technical information.
How do you sort out the good from the bad? Turns out the Internet is a good source for that information as well. General health information finding tools such as MedlinePIus® (http://www.medlineplus.gov), produced by the National Library of Medicine and Healthfinder® (http://www.healthfinder.gov) from the US Department of Health and Human Services, can get you pointed to credible health information quickly. MedlinePlus has an online tutorial from the National Library of Medicine: Evaluating Internet Health Information located at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/webeval/webeval.html. In addition, you can find A User’s Guide to Finding and Evaluating Health Information on the Web at http://www.mlanet.org/resources/userguide.html.
